Like so many people who work in the corporate world, the demands of the workplace can become the main focus of our lives. So it was with the fifteen years that I spent working in a variety of managerial positions for telecommunications companies from Montreal, Canada to Dublin, Ireland and back to Atlantic Canada. As I sought more challenging positions in the corporate world, these positions failed to provide me with the quality of life and balance between work and family that I had always sought.
My introduction to the corporate world began at Bell Canada. This fast paced, demanding, bilingual sales environment placed considerable emphasis on quality, customer service and productivity. This provided me with considerable knowledge and expertise as I coached and mentored teams, employees and colleagues to improve corporate targets. As I was promoted and excelled in this environment, my hard work was recognized nationally with a trip to the 2000 summer Olympics in Sydney Australia. It was during this trip that I was approached to consider an international assignment as director of the largest telecommunications company in Ireland.
As I was trying to come to terms with the opportunities before me, my life took an unexpected turn during my trip to Sydney. I met another Canadian from Atlantic, Canada who had decided to take in the summer Olympics while traveling around the South Pacific. We made plans to stay in touch and get together upon our return to Canada.
As both of us had no idea what the future would bring, I was encouraged and supported to pursue the opportunity in Ireland. As a Francophone Canadian stepping into a totally new culture, struggling with a new dialect in a foreign country, the transition was not without stress and fear. I will always remember; 6:30 am standing in the airport in Dublin, in the fog and rain with most of my possessions loaded on carts; thinking - What had I done? As daunting as moving forward seemed at that moment, going back was not an option. I no longer had a job and home in a familiar environment to return to. And then within my first year, I had taken a cost centre at risk of closing for failure to meet national regulations, and turned it into a revenue generator.
Other opportunities for growth presented themselves at this time that offered extensive travel, however, a home life would be non-existent. I needed to follow my heart, so I decided to return to Canada and place more emphasis on a balanced life with greater importance on family.
Just as I settled in Atlantic, Canada and began my job search, I felt that the pace that I had been setting for the last few years was beginning to take its toll. I had begun the process of setting up a new residence for the third time. I was constantly fatigued and having difficulty motivating myself. I had moved from a number of densely populated cosmopolitan cities to a small village in the middle of a lake system surrounded by woodland. My diagnosis was incorrect. I was expecting our daughter.
In two short plane rides, I had gone from being surrounded by the hustle and bustle of downtown Montreal, Dublin, London, and Paris to feeding llamas and a donkey and cleaning up after them.
Spending time with my daughter as she blossomed before me allowed me time consider what path I should take. I returned to working in a corporate environment in the telecommunications and banking industry, still feeling something was missing. I have always had a passion for helping people see their strengths and potential and capitalizing on them. With all the years of coaching that I have given, I realized a long time ago that people are their own harshest critics, including myself.
As I searched to find ways to balance both career and family, I realized self-employment was a viable option. I began searching for business opportunities that could provide me with a rewarding career, the flexibility to enjoy spending time with my family and utilize my skills and talent of motivating and mobilizing people.
